A center of Jewish mysticism, Safed (pronounced Tsfat) is located in the hills of northern Israel.
These meandering steps, walls, and streets of white stone are emblematic of Safed architecture. Safed is home to a thriving and eclectic art community, with some new-age cabalah encroachment also visible. |
The stairwell to the right of where we are standing is said to be a direct route to Jerusalem. When the Messiah comes and the dead arise, they will know the way to go. |

This altar is in the synagogue of Rabbi Isaac Luria, the medieval rabbi known as "the Ari," who started the traditions of Kabbalat Shabbat and Havdalah. Safed is home to a lot of little synagogues, including Rabbi Abuhav's shul, which blew intact on the winds of a storm all the way from Poland to Safed. Or so I'm told. |
