Tiberius is a city on the west side of the Sea of Galilee.
Typical old Tiberius house, made of black basalt (tsur) and white limestone trim. This one's being renovated. |
Dena on the rotting steps of a Crusader Castle in Tiberius. The Crusaders may have tried to kill us all, but they did leave some interesting ruins. |
The Biblical commentator Maimonides (Rabbi Moses Ben Maimon, also know as the Rambam) was born in Spain in 12th century, travelled through North Africa, died in Egypt, and is buried in Tiberius. Like the woman in the picture, people often come to pray at the grave. The blue plastic tarp separating the sexes is a recent and, one hopes, temporary addition. |
Hadar, Marcia, and Shelley at the shuk in Tiberius. Hadar is an Israeli high-school student who stayed with Shelley in Milwaukee last summer. This outdoor market is apparently a hot spot of teenage life in Tiberius. Besides bags and clothing, you can buy wonderfully fragrant spices, dried fruit and candy in open bins. Kosher gummy bears, impossible to find in the U.S., are here in disgustingly vast quantities. |
Avihu Medina, a popular Israeli singer, at the Yom Yerushalayim (Jerusalem Day) celebration in an amphitheatre in downtown Tiberius that dates to Roman times. The kids in the foreground are sitting on old stone pillers that dot the area. |
Yom Yerushalayim celebrates the reunification of Jerusalem in 1967. There were celebrations throughout the country, and Jerusalem was packed with visitors. I couldn't go because I had to teach. Here, a group of middle school students in Tiberius did a synchronized act with Israeli flags. |
Hammat Tiveria. is the source of the hot springs that flow through Tiberius. |
The mineral-laden water at the source is far too hot to touch, but it's warm and inviting when it gets to the spas. |
A series of ancient synagogues have been excavated in Hammat Tiveria. The mosaic is part of the remaining floor of a fourth century synagogue. |
![]() The spa has an indoor pool containing warm mineral water from the springs, as well as an outdoor area facing onto the Kinneret with regular swimming pool and spa things like massages, mud baths, and facials. |
Dena in banana chair at Hamei Tiveria spa diligently preparing for class. |
This sign was in the locker room of the spa. Seems timeless to me. |
